Till The Clouds Rool By " The Movies That Made Hollywood" in T

"TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY" is one of those great musical biography pictures that only Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer could do so well, TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY highlights the amazing career of composer Jerome Kern. But the film emerges more as an impressively star-studded, two-hour retrospective performance of some of America's greatest tunes. Almost everyone on the M-G-M lot appeared somewhere in the 135 minute Technicolor spectacular, and their presence made the songs and accompanying recreations of famed Broadway production numbers all the more overwhelming. The first twenty minutes of the picture is consumed by the remarkable songs from Kern-Hammerstein's landmark SHOW BOAT, and amazingly, the film builds form there. Robert Walker is perfect as the self-effacing Kern, and the composer's life story provides an apt framework upon which to rest the marvelous musical turns. You'll always remember these seminal melodies that still have the world singing, and gasp at some of the superstars who pop up just to warble a chorus or two of some eternal Jerome Kern composition.

Sex Drive (2008) (3pc)

Special edition includes 3 discs of hilarious action from the movie, with bonus features galore! Exclusive features include: The Passion of James and Clark, Fall Out Boy Rocks the Amish, and Seth Green: Method Actor featurettes. Sooner or later, the new breed of coming-of-age comedy (good ones like Superbad, not-so-good ones like College) had to inspire a parody of itself, and that self-conscious knock-off is the sporadically funny Sex Drive. A road movie about a virginal nice guy, Ian (John Zuckerman), who drives cross-country in his brother's car to score with a girl he met online, Sex Drive sounds like just another teen farce. But it isn't, exactly: with stops in a rockin' Amish community, in the redneck house of a bathroom fetishist, and in Ian's own family home (where a well-meaning new stepmother is continually exposed to Ian's unsavory private life), the film has an original life of its own. Casting counts for a lot in this movie. Clark Duke plays the likeable, over-confident nebbish we've come to expect since meeting McLovin' in Superbad, and Amanda Crew is Felicia, Ian's best friend and obvious romantic destiny (once these crazy kids figure that out). The three of them go traveling together in search of Ian's sure thing. But Sex Drive really becomes a much better comedy once Seth Green appears (as an Amish guy steeped in guilt-tripping sarcasm) and James Marsden (as Ian's bullying, homophobic brother) lets loose with a very funny performance. The two of them, really, have never been better on screen. There are a number of noteworthy scenes, particularly a chaotic climax that brings most of the characters together for an unexpected finish. Sex Drive, in some ways, is a more inspired movie than some of the ones it lampoons. --Tom Keogh

When Night Is Falling

Great lesbian recognition and romance film! A great romantic movie. This is not a slopped-together film for the sake of titillating the hetero male crowd with lesbian sex, nor a cheap, half-baked B-movie for the lesbian audience (I hate it when we settle for less). This is a real film by folks who know what it takes to make a movie (a romance, no less!), deliver a story, and develop its characters. Not since John Sayles' Lianna have I seen a movie of this caliber about a woman coming to terms with her sexuality. It has characters you care about, depth, and a subtle sense of humor. You'll find this movie enjoyable and refreshing, especially if you're tired of the straight movie industry's continued obsession with making gays and lesbians into murderers, psychos, weirdos and laughing stocks, and the gay subculture's portrayal of everyone as tattooed, leathered, and extreme.
