Rossetti's subjects were drawn from Dante and from a medieval dream world also contained in his poetry. In 1850 he met Elizabeth Siddal, who had posed for Millais. His best work was produced during the years of their uneasy association. They married in 1860; in 1862 she died and he became virtually a recluse.

Delacroix was the major painter of the Romantic movement in France. His visit to North Africa opened to him a whole new field of subjects: scenes from Arab life, battles, hunts, animals in combat, and portraits of intimate friends, such as Chopin. He contributed greatly to the struggle of the nonconforming artist against entrenched classicism.
